What is it?
A corneal ulcer is an injury to the cornea that may become very serious if it is not treated in time.
¿Por qué se produce?
- Infections
- Infections caused by contact lens use
- Trauma
- The presence of a foreign body in the eye
- Inadequate closure of the eyelid
Is it preventable?
It depends on the cause of the corneal ulcer, since it sometimes appears as a result of a knock or accident.
To avoid the appearance of infectious ulcers due to contact lens use, wearers are advised to follow the hygiene guidelines provided by their optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Symptoms
Corneal ulcers cause the following symptoms:
- Pain (sometimes very intense)
- Photophobia
- Tearing
- Red eye
- Visual problems
- In very serious cases, some patients find it difficult to open their eyes
Associated treatments
Treatment depends on the cause of the ulcer. If it is infectious, an intensive course of antibiotics and pain relief measures are prescribed.
It is essential that treatment starts as soon as possible, since corneal ulcers can cause permanent damage to the cornea if left untreated.
