Wet Lab (experimental surgery)
IMO Grupo Miranza Barcelona features its own Wet Lab, attached to the surgical area, where experimental surgeries are performed on pig eyes, whose anatomy is very similar to that of human eyes.
Who is the Wet Lab aimed at?
The Wet Lab is aimed at master’s students and residents who are studying at the IMO Grupo Miranza Barcelona headquarters. It is also open to external OR observers, subject to availability.
Furthermore, from the beginning of the academic year, each student profile must follow an annual goal plan, which includes training in the Wet Lab, as well as master’s classes, led by IMO Grupo Miranza ophthalmologists.
Which surgical techniques can be performed?
This experimental surgery area has recently been renovated in order to meet the growing demand from the students who train at IMO Grupo Miranza Barcelona each year.
It currently features 5 units, which are equipped with specific equipment and instruments to perform different types of eye surgeries, including:
- Cataract surgery (phacoemulsification).
- Vitrectomy.
- Glaucoma surgery (filtering surgery, valve implant).
- Corneal surgery (penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty).
- Secondary lens implantation techniques.
- Strabismus surgery.
- Some oculoplastic procedures, such as enucleations and eviscerations.
Close to a thousand specialists have been trained in IMO Grupo Miranza Barcelona's trailblazing Wet Lab.
It is expected that this project will continue to grow and may soon include new specialists linked to eye health who are also part of the clinic.
Moreover, rates are available to attend the Wet Lab, if an observership is held at our centre.
