Dr. Rafael Navarro, medical director of IMO Grupo Miranza Barcelona

Dr. Borja Corcóstegui, until now Medical Director of our clinic in Barcelona, has handed over the medical direction to his colleague, Dr. Rafael Navarro, thus giving way to the new generations.

The change is a point and a continuation in the career of Dr. Corcóstegui, who will continue to be linked to IMO Grupo Miranza, where he will continue to work as an ophthalmologist, as well as holding the presidency of the Fundación IMO.

Objective: to lead the ophthalmology of the future

In recent years, Dr. Navarro has taken on coordinating functions at the Barcelona headquarters of our clinic, culminating in his appointment as medical director.

For his part, Dr. Corcóstegui emphasizes “his involvement, as well as his leadership, decision-making and management skills. He also has a professional track record that endorses him at all levels”.

Likewise, this replacement comes at a time when the foundations are being laid for future therapies that will provide a solution to eye diseases, many of which are hereditary and currently untreated. For this reason, Dr. Navarro’s daily practice has always been characterized by combining clinical practice with research.

More than 3 decades of experience

Dr. Navarro is a medical retina specialist with more than 30 years of experience. He is an expert in:

• Hereditary retinal pathologies, such as retinosis pigmentaria  or Stargardt disease
• AMD.
• Diabetic retinopathy.

He also coordinates many of the clinical and basic research projects, the latter carried out in the molecular biology laboratory at our Barcelona headquarters.

Some of the projects in which he is involved are the development of an artificial vision chip to treat dry AMD, currently without a cure, or the treatment of this same disease with gene therapy.

Get to know Dr. Rafael Navarro better…

• He has been involved in ophthalmology for more than thirty years, combining clinical practice, as an ophthalmologist, with research.
• He is an expert in medical retina and leads many of the research projects of our Genetics Department.
• For the past decade, he has chaired the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of IMO Grupo Miranza.
• He is also the head of Miranza‘s R+D+i Department.
