What are they?
Collagen inducers are products that are injected into the face to activate the natural production of this protein, which forms the collagen fibres that are particularly abundant in bones and skin. The main aim of this cosmetic treatment is to eliminate facial sagging and achieve a firmer dermis.
The IMO uses two types of collagen-inducing substance which are applied in the facial area according to the needs of each patient:
- Calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse): this is indicated to stimulate the production of collagen in the most superficial layers of the skin. This treatment also produces the so-called ‘V-effect’, which involves restoring a youthful appearance to the face by performing a non-surgical facelift and, in some cases, can be combined with Ultherapy for better results.
- Polylactic acid (Sculptra): this has a potent collagen stimulating effect, more intense than the previous treatment. It is indicated to restore skin volume lost due to ageing or significant weight loss.
In what cases are they used?
Collagen-inducing substances are particularly indicated for patients with mature skin which begins to show signs of sagging or thinning. They can also be applied to people with a substantial loss of facial volume after a weight loss diet.
Prior examination
The oculofacial specialist performs a thorough examination of the eyelid and periocular area to determine the most suitable type of collagen inducer. Photographs are also taken to assess the patient’s condition before and after treatment, and between sessions if more than one is carried out.
During treatment
After cleaning the face and applying topical anaesthesia to the area to be treated, the collagen inducers are injected. The duration of treatment and the number of sessions required varies depending on the product being applied.
Product | Approximate duration | Sessions |
---|---|---|
Calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse) | Between 15 and 20 minutes | 1 session, although more sessions can be carried out according to the needs of the patient |
Polylactic acid (Sculptra) | Between 20 and 30 minutes | At least 2 sessions (separated by a one month interval), although the patient may require more sessions |
